The Town of Uppsala

A political, religious and commercial center from at least the 5th century, Uppsala was a pivotal place during the Viking age and one of the political capitals of Sweden until the 16th century. Holding Sweden’s main cathedral (Uppsala Domkyrka)and with the oldest University in the Nordic countries (established in 1477) it has remained an intellectual center in Sweden. Today Uppsala is Sweden’s 4th largest city with 200 000 inhabitants (150 000 in the metropolitan area) with modern knowledge-based industries. Situated 70 km (43 miles) north of Stockholm, Uppsala is also part of the larger metropolitan area surrounding Stockholm with only 34 km (21 miles) to Sweden’s main airport (Arlanda).
