The Economic Development of Swedish Commercial Banking – a Long Term Perspective

This aim of this project is to establish a database of key economic indicators for Swedish commercial banks for the period 1830-2000 and to use this database for a broader analysis of the Swedish financial system’s transition and development.

The database will contain information about for example lending, deposits, capital management, own funds, debt and interest rates. The data base will be made accessible for future research in financial history.

In this project we will primarily use the database for the analysis of risk exposure and risk management in Swedish banking in a long-term perspective. As the database contains information for 170 years, it will be possible to follow long-term changes, as well short-term and regional development in commercial banking.
